Soul Rejoicing opens with the stormy image of a band of horsemen riding fiercely in the darkness of a moonless night. Thus, with the sounds of pounding hooves and riders’ shouts, begins Perezvony (Chimes), Valery Gavrilin’s monumental multi-movement composition subtitled “On Reading V. Shukshyn Miracle Play—Choral Symphony.” Emotionally charged and rhythmically driven from the start, this movement continues to build with excitement and tension through Gavrilin’s brilliant use of choral texture, dynamics, and extended melodic lines. The text, written in the style of Russian folklore by the composer himself, doesn’t tell a story per se, rather it provides textual colors and strong images through many tongue-twisting, onomatopoeic word combinations such as “tuchi letuchie” (oppressive clouds), “slyozy solenye” (salty tears), “dushi palyonye” (scorched souls), etc. Dur.: 7’

Russian composer Valery Gavrilin (b. 1939, Volodga; d. 1999, St. Petersburg) completed his thirteen movement composition Chimes in 1982 and subtitled it “Upon Reading V. Shukshyn Miracle Play— Choral Symphony.” Scored for mixed chorus, narrator, percussion and solo oboe, this large choral fresco is deeply rooted in Russian folklore. Ti-Ri-Ri, the wordless movement #5, is a colorful and theatrical scene. One can almost see young men and women gathering (for a dance, perhaps), and as the voices enter one by one, the listener hears a different character from each vocal part. Dur.: 4’

Sharkova brings a third selection from Gavrilin's massive work Chimes to better choirs. Sunset Music features a consistent bell-like 5/4 rhythm in the lower voices, with a simple and lovely ringing melody in the higher range. The music builds to a forte clanging, before dying away into silence. Text is onomatopoeic syllables ("din don don" or a sustained "bom," etc.), and the optional (although recommended) oboe part is available as a free download: www.carlfischer.com/downloads. The Voyage
D. Farrell Smith
SATB Voices with Keyboard
As the final part of a trilogy, David Farrell Smith returns us to the theme that the spirit of a warrior is many times bound to the promise of love awaiting his return. Regardless of the conflict, history is replete with stories that highlight the faith of love, the fire of battle, and the hope of return. Inspired by the interactions of men and women as they embraced loved ones on either side of the journey, Smith started his epic with "Far Away My Love Has Gone," a song for treble voices. "Cry Havoc!" is the second offering in the set, written for male voices. This concluding movement is "The Voyage," set for SATB voices. These work well individually, but are very moving when presented as a group.
