Soul Rejoicing opens with the stormy image of a band of horsemen riding fiercely in the darkness of a moonless night. Thus, with the sounds of pounding hooves and riders’ shouts, begins Perezvony (Chimes), Valery Gavrilin’s monumental multi-movement composition subtitled “On Reading V. Shukshyn Miracle Play—Choral Symphony.” Emotionally charged and rhythmically driven from the start, this movement continues to build with excitement and tension through Gavrilin’s brilliant use of choral texture, dynamics, and extended melodic lines. The text, written in the style of Russian folklore by the composer himself, doesn’t tell a story per se, rather it provides textual colors and strong images through many tongue-twisting, onomatopoeic word combinations such as “tuchi letuchie” (oppressive clouds), “slyozy solenye” (salty tears), “dushi palyonye” (scorched souls), etc. Dur.: 7’

Russian composer Valery Gavrilin (b. 1939, Volodga; d. 1999, St. Petersburg) completed his thirteen movement composition Chimes in 1982 and subtitled it “Upon Reading V. Shukshyn Miracle Play— Choral Symphony.” Scored for mixed chorus, narrator, percussion and solo oboe, this large choral fresco is deeply rooted in Russian folklore. Ti-Ri-Ri, the wordless movement #5, is a colorful and theatrical scene. One can almost see young men and women gathering (for a dance, perhaps), and as the voices enter one by one, the listener hears a different character from each vocal part. Dur.: 4’

Sharkova brings a third selection from Gavrilin's massive work Chimes to better choirs. Sunset Music features a consistent bell-like 5/4 rhythm in the lower voices, with a simple and lovely ringing melody in the higher range. The music builds to a forte clanging, before dying away into silence. Text is onomatopoeic syllables ("din don don" or a sustained "bom," etc.), and the optional (although recommended) oboe part is available as a free download: www.carlfischer.com/downloads. This book provides a systematic process for improving the following: sight-singing skills, integration of visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles in reading music, and overall musicianship. The learning strategies which accompany the melodies presented in this text incorporate all senses through multisensory learning. These ideas give direction to the learner and the teacher in developing the necessary musical skills and confidence to sight-sing in a manner which includes musical accuracy while encouraging good vocal technique. Using this type of consistent, thoughtful organization of concepts, students can learn to be secure in their abilities as music readers, as well as becoming “insightful singers.”

From Concepts to Concerts:
Building Competence in the Choral Classroom

By Earlene Rentz
Foreword by André J. Thomas

Carl Fischer Music
CMF4 • $34.95

Carl Fischer Music is thrilled to announce From Concepts to Concerts from Dr. Earlene Rentz, a supplementary text for the choral rehearsal which provides exercises that teach fundamental concepts to choral singers. Dr. Rentz has drawn from her years of experience as a choral director and clinician to create these exercises, which are arranged progressively in difficulty, allowing all grade levels to benefit from the collection.

Choral teachers can identify musical problems within their groups and fix them before learning new repertoire, allowing for more efficient rehearsals. Plus, each exercise covers concepts within the context of an actual octavo. Some basic concepts covered include: rhythm, pitch, tempo, phrasing, diction, style, and meter. Carl Fischer has also helpfully provided classroom reproduction permission for ALL exercises. Choral directors will be grateful for this indispensable teaching tool! For all levels.

Let Nature Sing is the newest addition to the BriLee Music vocal solo book series for young singers. This volume contains ten songs in a variety of styles from spirituals and folk songs to originally composed works, all by female composers. Each song is specifically tailored to the treble voice, from narrow ranges of six and seven notes to others that expand the range as the voice continues to develop and mature. These songs challenge the voice without taxing it, and encourage the development of expressiveness rather than over-extension. Sharaf Three SettingsThree Settings from Imitations by Robert Lowell
By Frederic Sharaf
Mezzo-Soprano and Piano

Carl Fischer Music
V2498 - Score - $12.99
See sample pages (PDF)

Robert Lowell, sixth U.S. Poet Laureate, winner of the 1960 National Book Award ("Life Studies"), and twice awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, took a minor detour in 1961 to ponder the works of international poets, writing a set of "loose translations" which became his Imitations - he considered them imitations, not translations, since he pictured the texts as being written in current times in America.

Today, Sharaf takes three "imitations" on poems of Baudelaire to create his Three Settings for mezzo-soprano and piano. About the music, he says, "These settings are atonal musically, but frequent appoggiaturas suggest the resolution of inner conflict in Lowell’s life. A medium tessitura is suggested for performance." Texts used are The Injured Moon, Meditation, and The Voyage by Baudelaire, "translated" by Robert Lowell from his Collected Poems. For advanced performers.

Composer Ricky Ian Gordon has given us another masterpiece in the form of eleven songs written for soprano voice with piano: Too Few the Mornings Be, based on the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Written specially for the great Renée Fleming, this collection contains a personal note from Fleming herself, praising the beauty and freedom of the songs within, saying “I love how you write for the voice; the vocal line moves freely throughout the whole range.” This simple, elegant collection is truly a gift to soprano soloists. For the advanced singer.

The Wilson’s Ivory-bill is the largest species of North American woodpecker and has long-since been presumed extinct until a recent sighting. Carl Fischer Music
MXE39 - Score and Parts - $42.99

Lansky's set of three songs was composed for the trio, Crazy Jane (Patrick Mason, baritone; David Starobin, guitar; Daniel Druckman, percussion), and recorded by them. One reviewer describes the set as such: "In Ten Thousand Miles, baritone Mason communicates the emotions aroused by parting from a lover. Stay a While has a close-knit melody with light percussive variations that sometimes sound like raindrops. It also has a pleasant interlude between the verses. The final Lansky song, When I’m Gone, rounds out the disc with fast and light rhythms." Hear snippets from the album here. For advanced performers.

Already popular as a choral work, orchestral work and concert band piece, this new edition of Pacem Noel for string orchestra has been transposed so it can be performed in four different ways: independently, as an accompaniment to the choral version (CM9226), along with the band version (YPS85), or together with both band and chorus. This delightful holiday arrangement is based on the popular canon Dona Nobis Pacem combined with the famous carol The First Noel. It is effective, yet simple, and it brings together two beautiful songs in a delicate and musical way. As the title implies, may we all have "Peace for Christmas." See a page (JPG).
