The Art of Instrumental AccompanyingThe Art of Instrumental Accompanying:
A Practical Guide for the Collaborative Pianist

By Heasook Rhee
Text

Carl Fischer Music
TXT8 - $39.99

Written by Dr. Heasook Rhee, faculty member in Piano Chamber Music and Accompanying at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City since 1998, this book is intended for pianists with different levels of experience. Dr. Rhee draws from her vast career as a collaborative pianist, having performed with many distinguished artists of our time, including violinists Ivry Gitlis, Ilya Grubert, Peter Zazofsky; cellists Marcio Carneiro, Charles Curtis, Karine Georgian, the late Samuel Mayes, Nathaniel Rosen, Jian Wang, Tilmann Wick; tenor Nikolai Gedda, bass-baritone Simon Estes, soprano Youngok Shin, the late flutist Julius Baker, and saxophonist Harvey Pittel.

The Art of Instrumental Accompanying serves as an introduction for pianists who are beginning to learn accompanying for major students, and also for teachers who might be interested in considering these reflections and examples. The author’s aim here is to introduce prospective accompanists to some practical tools and concepts that will improve their skills and provide a systematic and hierarchical understanding of pertinent ensemble issues. This text is an invaluable tool from an expert artist.

Webern Three Works for PianoThree Works for Piano
By Anton Webern
Critical Edition by Matthew Shaftel
Piano solo

Carl Fischer Music
PL1036 – Score – $12.99
See sample pages (PDF)

Matthew Shaftel has assembled a well-researched critical edition of select Webern piano works, which together speak volumes of the composer's compositional growth over his early years. The Satz and Rondo represent the Romanticism which framed Webern's writing, even while he studied with Schoenberg, while the short Kinderstück is the first of his dodecaphonic (twelve-tone) works, a relatively simple piece for children. Shaftel includes a thorough discussion of the three pieces, along with complete critical notes about the edition. For intermediate to advanced pianists.

Roy Harris's Toccata is enjoying a resurgence, of late. A breathtaking, challenging example of the late 20th century American toccata form, Toccata appears on recent recordings by Geoffrey Burleson (Roy Harris: Complete Piano Music; Naxos Classical 8.559664) and Philip Amalong (Touch: The Toccata Project; Albany Records TROY 1142). Listen to Amalong's performance on YouTube.

P3322 - $14.95

For almost eighty years, only incomplete manuscripts of this work were known to exist, but in 2007, the Eastman School of Music acquired a manuscript that had been in private hands since Howard Hanson’s widow’s death in 1996. Carl Fischer Music has now made this important work available to the world. Most notably, the final movement is well-known as one of the first symphonic band compositions by an American composer: "Triumphal Ode." A welcome addition to the library of music by a seminal American composer. For the intermediate to advanced player.

Ishi's Song

Ishi's Song

PL140 - $14.99
See a page (JPG)

Ishi was among the last of the Yahi Indians. Living in northern California, these Native Americans were part of a larger group known as the Yana. They were ruthlessly suppressed and finally decimated at the end of the nineteenth century. The few remaining Yahi people hid in the mountains until they all died, leaving only Ishi. He was found and brought to the University of California at Berkeley by sympathetic anthropology professors Alfred Kroeber and T.T. Waterman. Ishi lived for several years at the University’s museum, then in San Francisco, teaching the professors and other researchers the ways of his people and helping to create a dictionary of his language. He was the last native speaker of the Yahi-Yana language. The opening melody of Bresnick’s work was taken from a transcription and recording made by Ishi himself, singing what he called The Maidu Doctor’s Song. There is no known translation of the text. Ishi’s Song was commissioned by Aeroporti di Puglia and is dedicated to Maestro Emanuele Arciuli. For advanced players.

A Meet The Composer commission led to Bresnick's 8-movement evocation for pianist Lisa Moore and the So Percussion. From the San Francisco Chronicle: "Martin Bresnick's fierce instrumental cycle for piano and percussion ensemble takes its inspiration from Goya's etchings of the ravages of war - not only in its movement titles and subject matter but also in its dexterous combination of folk strains and dark, almost expressionist howls of outrage." For more information, watch the composer discussing the creative process on YouTube, or watch a presentation of the work here. For advanced performers.

"...After repeated hearings, the work grows even more interesting. Most people hear new works once, and only once, which is unfortunate since works like Eckardt's rarely reveal all of their secrets in one pass." - Bruce Hodges, Musicweb UK

From the composer: "Notes to Self is a set of four preludes for piano. They are notes from a composer's diary, in a sense, explorations of a sort that says, 'I always wanted to try this.'" Four evocative titles include Left-Handed Complements, Finger Tips, Toccata, and Talk It Over, each of which presents new and varied challenges to contemporary pianists. For advanced performers.
